Meet Freddie… • He is a happy little fish • He has lived in the same little stream for his whole life • He has decided to go on an adventure • He has left his little stream below Philadelphia, and decided to head north.
Freddie’s Adventure • On the first day of Freddie’s adventure he came upon a farm • The banks of the river that ran along the farmland had been plowed • The farmer had also used a great deal of fertilizer and pesticides to make sure his crops would grow. • Where did the pesticides and fertilizers go when it began to rain?
Freddie’s Adventure • The next day, Freddie came upon an area where new houses were being built • Because of the construction, the ground had been torn up • What happens when it rains on a construction site?
Freddie’s Adventure • The next day the stream Freddie was traveling in joined the Delaware River putting him right next to the city. • Philadelphia is a big city, with lots of roads and parking lots. • On these roads and parking lots are many oil stains which have come from leaking cars. • And also lots of trash on the streets in the city. • Where does all that trash and oil go when it rains?
Freddie’s Adventure • Freddie discovered with a little investigation that in the city the trash and oil off the streets washed down into sewer holes that dump into the Delaware River.
Freddie’s Adventure • The next day, Freddie came upon The Walt Whitman Bridge. • It was the middle of wintertime now, so snow and rain fell a lot • To prevent the bridge from freezing, the PENN-DOT people put salt on the bridge • When the snow and ice melted, where did all the salt go?
Freddie’s Adventure • When the springtime rolled around, Freddie was next to a city park. • Picnickers had carelessly left their garbage on the ground. • When the spring storms hit, where did that garbage go?
