2. Learning Targets / Standards Learning Targets: • I will be able to use maps and charts to develop descriptions, theories and explanations about how people live in the Middle East. • I will be able to define: gender inequality, imports and exports. Standards: • Use geographic tools to gather data and make geographic inferences and predictions. • Regions have different issues and perspectives.

3. Directions • Read each slide. Use the maps, charts and images to answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper. • Write your answer in RACE format. Points will be deducted for answers not in complete sentences.

4. The Middle East • Look at the maps below. Why do you think this region is called the “Middle East?” (The Middle East is circled in purple) 2) What do you already know about this part of the world?

5. Describe the Land • Use the physical map and the climate map on the next two slides. 3) Write a description of the geography in the Middle East. Use 3 facts/details from the maps.

7. Climate Use the maps on the previous slide and the maps to the right. 4) Why do most people live in the eastern part of Iraq?

8. Part II: Economics • Skip a line. • Label this next section “Part 2: Economics.” • Don’t forget to write your answers in RACE format.

Economy Look at the map to the right (there is a larger one on the next slide) and use it to answer the questions. 5) List the types of goods Iraq produces. 6) Make a prediction—which of these goods do you think Iraq exports (sends out/sells) to other countries? 7) Using this map, how does Iraq get most of its electricity? (Use the Learners Dictionary if you need to look up a word) 8) Predict what might happen if countries north of Iraq dammed (blocked) the rivers.

11. GDP GDP (or Gross Domestic Product) measures the wealth of a country. It is a total of the value of all the goods and services produced in a country. The darker red countries on the map have the highest GDP (more wealth). The lighter red have the lowest. 9) Name two Middle East countries with a higher GDP and two countries with a lower GDP.

12. Economics of the Middle East 10) Write a definition for imports. 11) Write a definition for exports. 12) Look at the two graphs on the next page. What do these graphs tell us about the countries with a high GDP in the Middle East? 13) What do they tell us about the countries with a low GDP?

14. 14) When there is fighting in this part of the world, gasoline prices go up in the United States. Why? In your answer include facts from at least two graphs in this Map Quest.

15. Part III: Social Issues • Skip a line and label the next part of your map quest: “Social Issues.” 14) Use the Learners to Dictionary to write a definition of “gender inequality.” You will have to look up both words separately.

16. Gender Inequality Look at the map to the right. 15) What does this map tell us about the education of girls in Iraq compared to the education of girls in the U.S.? Gender parity = equal education for boys and girls Disadvantaged = unequal education; someone does not have access to the same kind of services.

17. Gender Inequality • Read the short article on Malala from Teaching Kids News. 16) Who is Malala? 17) How is she fighting gender inequality? 18) Malala says people who do not believe girls should have access to education have a fear of knowledge. What do you think she means?
