  1. What is a ballad? Group 1: Katie Jones, Zach Smith, Sara James, and John Drake

  2. What are ballads? Ballads are narrative poems that are often put to music. They originated in the thirteenth century and many are old folk tales. The first ballads were passed down orally through the centuries without being written down. Ballads still exist today through popular songs.

  3. Typical Ballad Form • Ballads are typically separated into four line stanzas called quatrains. • Have the rhyme scheme of ABCB

  4. Example: Stanzas from “Ballad of Birmingham” • "Mother dear, may I go downtown        • Instead of out to play, • And march the streets of Birmingham • In a Freedom March today?" • "No, baby, no, you may not go, • For the dogs are fierce and wild, • And clubs and hoses, guns and jails • Aren't good for a little child."

  5. 16th Street Baptist Church Birmingham, Alabama
