NC Geospatial Data Archiving Project (NCGDAP) • Lead organizations: • North Carolina State University Libraries • North Carolina Center for Geographic Information & Analysis (NCCGIA) • Focus: • State and local government geospatial data in NC • Repository development as catalyst for discussion • Goal: Engage spatial data infrastructure (SDI) in data archiving • Oct. 2004 to Feb. 2010

NC OneMap (SDI) informed by data preservation needs Leverage existing infrastructure Emerging data exchange networks (streets, parcels) Data sharing needs drive infrastructure development State Archives interfaced with state geo organization Bring Archives infrastructure in as part of SDI NC Archiving and Long-Term Access Committee Community-developed practices recommendations Structure and organization created

GeoMAPP: Geospatial Multistate Archival and Preservation Partnership • Partners (NC, KY, UT): • State geospatial organizations • State Archives • State-to-state and geo-to-Archives collaboration • Organizational and technical diversity across states • Archives as part of spatial data infrastructure • Selection and appraisal processes • Retention schedule development • Data transfer to archives • Development of business cases

Big challenges for the next six years Funding cuts to state governments Making the business case for data preservation Large scale storage costs for raster data Organizational and technical infrastructure for geographically-distributed data repositories Community-developed best practices Over-arching data discovery mechanisms
