What do we need to know, understand and be able to do? Data Driven Dialogue in a Professional Learning Community … assessing student learning
How does data make you feel? • Let’s take a look!
Here’s what … • Environment • Data vocabulary • Data format
Environment • Create a culture of trust and collaboration • Build capacity • Provide Professional Development focused on Effective Data Teams • Monitor the work • Modify actions along the way • Validate that what you are doing is working… fidelity and efficacy
How? • Create “natural” teams • Create teams for a purpose • Develop team norms for efficacy • Select protocols that support the team work • Meet frequently to examine the data (student work) to monitor student learning along the way
Data formats … • Bar graphs • Line graphs • EXCEL spread sheets • Scatter plots • Tables • Authentic samples • Censograms
Data vocabulary • Keep it simple … but don’t dumb it down • Build on background knowledge • Make connections • Be consistent • Minimize new terminology … you can always add to the word bank • Begin with a specific data set you are going to examine
So what? • Important elements
What is important? • Clarity • Simplicity • Consistency • Relevancy • Accuracy • Timeliness
Teachers as experts • The data collected need to be aligned with the standards and performance indicators • The curriculum needs to be aligned with the standards and performance indicators -------------------------- • The teaching needs to be aligned with the standards and performance indicators • The learning will reflect understanding of the knowledge, skills and abilities articulated in the standards and performance indicators
Let’s begin the process… • Examine the data • Check for understanding • Model • Provide practice • Encourage data vocabulary • Reinforce, validate and promote leadership
Now what? • Why should we engage in these practices? • What are the next steps?
Support • Encourage, assist and champion each other along the way and at the gate!
Bernhardt 1996 • “What separates the schools that will be successful in their reform efforts from the ones that won’t is the use of one, often neglected, essential element – DATA”
