About Disability Services • Disclosure of a disability in college is voluntary • If a student tells you he or she has a disability, please refer to my office • My web page has tons of helpful information, including an application, documentation guidelines and policies
Disability Services • Disabilities on campus include physical complaints, learning disabilities, mental health issues, veterans issues • Typical accommodations include extra time on tests, note takers, note cards, interpreters, screen reading software, etc.
Disability Services • What the letter of accommodation means • How to implement accommodations • Accommodations are not retroactive • What to do if you have questions • Please refer students to me • Can I flunk a student with a disability? (yes, of course!)
Your Responsibilities • I may ask you to solicit a note taker; let me know if you want me to come to class • Please be sure to include a statement about referring students to my office in your syllabus or class policy sheet; I can give you the language • You need to implement the accommodations on the letter, particularly testing
Counseling Services Available • Counseling is available for students at no charge • Location will be in Room 119 • Tammy, Suzanne, or I can make appointments • Please refer students to us for problems that may necessitate short-term counseling services • Counselors can address crises or problems in the classroom as well
Veterans Educational Benefits • Students are certified for their benefits by Tammy Steckler • Veterans often have problems with sitting in front of the class, public speaking, and memory • Veterans can be agitated easily, have triggers for anxiety or panic attacks, and have unrealistic expectations • Please refer students of concern to us!
