ST. MARYS AREA DUTCH FOOTBALL Understanding our base WING T OFFENSE
What is a WING T OFFENSE ? + RUNNING PLAYS PASSING PLAYS Play Action Passes Power plays Dropback Passes Speed plays Misdirection plays Delay Passes
We will discuss each play later… Let’s give a name to each of the offensive positions first!
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN RED are LINEMEN consisting of a CENTER, 2 GUARDS, & 2 TACKELS T G C G T OFFENSIVE LINEMEN… must be set and on the LOS - Line of Scrimmage at the snap of the ball. Are INELIGIBLE receivers and cannot be past the LOS on passing plays
RECEIVERS BLUE are RECEIVERS consisting of a TIGHT END and a SPLIT END TE T G C G T SE RECEIVERS… must be set and on the LOS - Line of Scrimmage at the snap of the ball. Are ELIGIBLE receivers
OFFENSIVE BACKS GREEN are BACKS consisting of a QB, a Fullback, a Halfback and a Wingback TE T G C G T SE QB WB BACKS… must be set at the snap of the ball. Are ELIGIBLE receivers FB HB
SPACING between POSITIONS 3” 2” 2” 2” 2” 8-15 yds TE T G C G T SE 1x1 WB QB 4yds FB HB
Now that we know the names of the positions and the spacing between the players Let’s talk about play calling !
EVERY PLAY BEGINS WITH A 1. LEO (left) or ROGER (right) CALL this designates where the Split End will go. = Leo (Split goes left) SE T G C G T TE = Roger (split goes right) TE T G C G T SE The TIGHT END will line up opposite the Split
NEXT ----EVERY PLAY HAS A 1. LEO (left) or ROGER (right) CALL 2. NUMBER that determines how the RB line up That will take some explaining!
BACKFIELD ALIGNMENT Let’s now explain how we number our formations. Imagine a two TE alignment that looks like this… 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 TE TE The first thing we do is number each man – left to right (just like you read a book)
1 FORMATION If the WB is on the LEFT next to the #1 man - the FORMATION is 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 QB WB FB HB
7 FORMATION If the WB is on the RIGHT next to the #7 man - the FORMATION is 7. Pretty simple so far. Remember that in 1 & 7 the HB always lines up opposite the WB. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 QB WB HB FB
2 FORMATION By moving the HB over to the same side of the WB behind the #2 man we have changed the backfield into a 2 Formation. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 QB WB HB FB
6 FORMATION Just the opposite for the 6 Formation ….. By moving the HB over to the same side of the WB behind the #6 man we have changed the backfield into a 6 Formation. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 QB WB FB HB Remember that in 2 & 6 the HB & WB are on the same side.
17 FORMATION The last formation is the 17 FORMATION … Very simply we are placing both RB’s in the WB position. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 QB HB WB FB
to Review... 1 Formation 7 Formation and its opposite W W F H H F 2 Formation 6 Formation and its opposite W W H F F H
and lastly... 17 Formation H W F Both RB’s line up in the WB position
Some examples of what we have learned already... This is a ROGER 1 because the SE is to the Right and the WB is opposite the HB next to the #1 man. TE SE QB WB FB HB This is a LEO 2 because the SE is to the Left and the WB is on the same side as the HB next to the #2 man. SE TE WB QB HB FB
NEXT ----EVERY PLAY HAS A 1. LEO (left) or ROGER (right) CALL 2. NUMBER -designates alignment of the backs 3. NAME Let’s go back to an earlier slide
What is a WING T OFFENSE ? + RUNNING PLAYS PASSING PLAYS Play Action Passes Power plays Dropback Passes Speed plays Misdirection plays Delay Passes Let’s Look at the RUNNING PLAYS FIRST
RUNNING PLAYS Power plays Speed plays Misdirection plays At this level we have a name for each of plays in the group POWER & BELLY JET & SWEEP QUICK & COUNTER
Let’s see if we can put it all together and diagram a play? LEO 7 POWER RIGHT Leo put the SE here 0 lineman 0 0 0 0 0 and the TE here 0 0 0 0 Remaining backs go here 0 7 put he WB here
LEO 7 POWER RIGHT BACKFIELD RULES HB = Ball Carrier FB = kicks outs the first man past TE WB= influence block QB= hands off to HB SE = downfield blocking S T BLOCKING RULES Playside Rule - block the 1st man inside Backside Rule – Guard will pull & lead and the OT will fill his hole. W H F
LEO 7 BELLY LEFT BACKFIELD RULES HB = Wham blocks on LB FB = ball carrier WB= motion to the play QB= reverse pivots & hands off SE = downfield blocking BLOCKING RULES Playside Rule - Crossblock between guard & tackle. Backside Rule – seal playside and downfield blocking S T W H F
CONFUSED YET? READ the FOLLOWING STATEMENT In our offense we try to attack a certain hole by having all the linemen block down in the same direction, and then kicking out the defender remaining in the hole with another blocker. - - - “BLOCK DOWN – KICK OUT !!!” REMEMBER THIS !!!
RUNNING PLAYS Power plays Speed plays Misdirection plays POWER & BELLY JET & SWEEP QUICK & COUNTER Let’s look at the Speed plays
LEO 7 SWEEP RIGHT BACKFIELD RULES HB = Ball Carrier FB = Quick fake WB= downblock QB= hands off to HB SE = downfield blocking S T BLOCKING RULES Playside Rule - playside Guard pull and kicks out 1st man outside the block of the WB. Everyone else blocks the first man to your inside Backside Rule – Guard will pull & lead and the OT will fill his hole. W H F
LEO 7 JET LEFT BACKFIELD RULES HB = reach blocks man outside of OT FB = dive fake WB= motion and receive handoff QB= reverse out hand off and carry out fake SE = downfield blocking S T BLOCKING RULES Playside Rule - playside Guard pull and kicks out 1st man outside the block of the WB. Everyone else blocks the first man to your inside Backside Rule – Guard will pull & lead and the OT will fill his hole. W H F
WAIT A MINUTE ! We don't block down & kick out on JET? READ the FOLLOWING STATEMENT You are correct !!! In our offense JET is the only play that we reach block instead of blocking down. It is our only play designed to get outside. REMEMBER THIS TOO !!!
RUNNING PLAYS Power plays Speed plays Misdirection plays POWER & BELLY QUICK & COUNTER JET & SWEEP Now - Let’s look at the Misdirection plays
RULES for MISDIRECTION READ the FOLLOWING STATEMENT Each of the misdirection plays requires the offense to identify the HOLEMAN (the man to be trapped). Once the holeman is identified only the pulling lineman can trap that man. REMEMBER THIS AS WELL !!!
LEO 7 QUICK LEFT BACKFIELD RULES HB = Sweep fake FB = Ball carrier WB= downfield QB= hands off to FB, sweep fake SE = downfield blocking S T BLOCKING RULES Playside Rule - playside Guard pulls and traps the 1st man past the Center (HOLEMAN). Everyone else blocks the first man to your inside Backside Rule – Block first man inside And not the holeman W H F
LEO 7 COUNTER RIGHT BACKFIELD RULES HB = Ball carrier FB = Belly fake WB= motion QB= fake belly, give ball to HB SE = downfield blocking S T BLOCKING RULES Playside Rule - Identify the 1st man past the Center (HOLEMAN). Blocks the first man to your inside and not the holeman Backside Rule – Backside Tackle pull and traps the first man outside the Center W H F
READ the FOLLOWING STATEMENT These are the BASE WING T PLAYS. There are only six. You must learn them and understand them before you can add to your offense. AND REMEMBER THIS TOO… A good offense is determined not by how many plays you have but how well you run them
DID YOU NOTICE…. That BELLY & COUNTER look alike… And QUICK and SWEEP look alike… THEY ARE PART OF A SERIES OF PLAYS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO LOOK ALIKE. Now let’s Look at the PASSING PLAYS
PASSING PLAYS Play Action Passes Dropback Passes Delay Passes We have three different types of passes in our base offense. Let’s look at play action first.
PLAY ACTION PASSING Play Action Passes are designed to fool the defense by making it look like we are running the ball. There are two play action passes we use in our offense BELLY PASS WAGGLE PASS
PLAY ACTION PASSING LEO 7 BELLY LEFT PASS BACKFIELD RULES HB = pass route to FLAT FB = fake Belly run WB= motion and block last man on line QB= fake Belly, rolls out to pass SE = post corner route TE = backside Drag S T W BLOCKING RULES All interior lineman block the hole away from the direction of the play. H F
PLAY ACTION PASSING LEO 7 WAGGLE LEFT PASS BACKFIELD RULES HB = Sweep fake FB = Quick fake WB= deep post route QB= Quick Sweep fake, stand tall 8 yards behind OT SE = post corner route TE = backside Drag S T W BLOCKING RULES All interior lineman block the hole away from the direction of the play. H F
PASSING PLAYS Play Action Passes Dropback Passes Delay Passes Drop back passing does not attempt to fool the defense. To understand this we have to explain something called a Passing Tree
DROP BACK PASSING 0 Pattern – (Fade) 9 Pattern– (Flag) 8 Pattern – (Post) 15 - - - - - - - - 6 Pattern – (Hook) 7 Pattern – (Curl) 10 - - - - - - - - 5 Pattern – (Deep Out) - - - - - - - - 3 Pattern – (Short Out) 5 4 Pattern – (Slant) 1 Pattern – (Bail) 2 Pattern – (Hitch) EVEN ODD
DROP BACK PASSING By using a PASSING TREE we can call Combination routes with 2 or more receivers. 15 10 5 6 pattern 5 pattern EXAMPLE- Roger 7 – 56 Pass Right
PASSING PLAYS Play Action Passes Dropback Passes Delay Passes Lastly there is Delayed passing. At this level it consists of just one play = Sideline Screen
DELAY PASSING ROGER 7 SCREEN LEFT BACKFIELD RULES HB = attack DE , release, receive ball FB = pass blocking WB= deep post route QB= dropback and deliver ball to HB SE = deep post route TE = post corner route T S W BLOCKING RULES Interior lineman on the playside will pass block for a two count and release to the flat. H F
Do you remember this statement? A good offense is determined not by how many plays you have but how well you run them
You now have a basic understanding of our offense. One Final Thought
