Does the Institute enact its stated values? “The clearly stated values are the template for planning across all levels and programs. They are clear for staff to act upon and in themselves attract to the organisation employees of like values.”
How are the stated values demonstrated by behaviour? “From School Director to Management the values of the Institute are upmost in their mind. Example of which is students as the centre of every decision and upmost in all thought processes.”
What do you believe are the demonstrated values of the Institute? “I believe service and people are the most demonstrated values – there is a general belief that excellence is also demonstrated but lack of reflection and resistance to change can sometimes block this.”
What do you believe the values of the Institute should be? “There’s nothing wrong with the current values as long as they’re being implemented and not just lip service.”

Importance of Values “When our environment is congruent with our values, we are empowered to act to the best of our ability. When we perceive that our environment is not congruent with our values, we are less likely to perform to our own highest standards” Dattner Grant 2002
Values Defined “Values describe what individuals consider to be important. They represent wants, preferences, desires, likes and dislikes for particular things, conditions or situations. Values describe the things that matter the most to an individual, the things that he or she will make sacrifices for in order to obtain.” Ponser & Munson

Our Study - Methodology • Staff surveys circulated to staff from all levels and staffing categories across major campuses. • Respondents answered a series of statements using a five point scale ranging from very important to very unimportant OR strongly agree to strongly disagree
Methodology • The survey was designed to inform whether or not - stated Institute values guide Institute behaviour - demonstrated Institute values were the same as stated Institute values - Institute values guide Institute behaviour - respondent values align to Institute values • Verbatim comments – not included in our report available today but very important for identifying trends and themes.
Data Confirmation • To confirm survey findings and interpretations of data, interviews were held with senior managers at AMES, Chisholm and NMIT.
Methodological Weaknesses • Small sample size at each Institute AMES 34, Chisholm 36, NMIT 34 • Under-representation of some groups • Over-representation from specific campuses

Personal and Organisational Values Alignment The stated values at NMIT are: • Excellence through quality • Financial viability and ethical business • Diversity in employees, clients and customers • Professional currency of staff • Client focussed approach • Innovative approach • Building relationships to expand profile of NMIT (For the record, NMIT does not have a list of clearly articulated values. These are derived from policies and strategic plan)
Personal and Organisational Values Alignment The stated values at Chisholm are: • Integrity • Resourcefulness • Student centredness • Relevance • Cohesion (Please note that during the life of this project the stated values at Chisholm changed to the following: Integrity, Resourcefulness, Student centredness, Engagement and Commitment)
SUMMARY The findings of this study suggest that: • Stated organisational values at Chisholm, AMES and NMIT are understood and are largely seen to be enacted. • The organisations have a reasonable level of alignment between stated organisation values and the central personal values. • It is also clear from verbatim comments that it is the perception of some respondents that Institute values are enacted inconsistently. • Therefore, whilst the stated values may align reasonably well with the personal values of those that responded, work remains at the each organisation to ensure its stated values are consistently applied.
