  1. Hitler was impressed by Japan’s strike on PH & promptly declared war on the U.S. • Germans seemed unstoppable & Japan had a HUGE population/ army defending it • German subs were sinking ships faster than Allies could replace them • Axis powers owned most of Europe

  2. Soviets Under Siege • German armies were closing in on Moscow, Leningrad & Stalingrad • Soviets responded as best as they could • They burned crops & destroyed farm equipment – a tactic known as scorched earth • 1,000,000 Russian men, women & children died

  4. Japanese Advances Japanese took Guam, WakeIsland, Hong Kong & Singapore

  5. General Douglas McArthur commanded U.S. forces in the Pacific • Remember him?...He was in charge of shutting down the Bonus Army Camp • Few troops to defend a large area • In the end, McArthur was severely outnumbered but vowed to return • Japan continued to expand I’ll be back!!!!
