  10. Asphalt travel lanes 12ft wide Paved shoulders 4ft to 5ft wide Last resurfaced in 2003 Intersection signalized in 2005 Land use is agricultural with some commercial Existing Conditions S.R. 19

  11. Asphalt travel lanes 12 ft. wide Paved shoulders 1-2 ft. wide Last resurfaced in 2002 Intersection signalized in 2005 Land use is agricultural and residential Existing Conditions S.R. 119

  12. Narrow travel lanes, 9 ft wide No shoulders Poor drainage Commercial property access Stop-control at S.R. 19 C.R. 44 East is gravel road Poor intersection angle Existing Conditions C.R. 44

  13. Small structure over Christophel Ditch Concrete slab box culvert with concrete wingwalls Exposed reinforcing steel Concrete fractures Scour present Wingwalls require riprap Existing Small Structure

  14. Single Lane Roundabout Designed to accommodate oversize trucks Center island and outside truck aprons Similar capacity to signalized intersection Everyone slows down Intersection Improvement

  15. Approaches are broken down into shoulder sections and curb & gutter sections S.R. 19 12 ft-wide lane & 8 ft shoulder transitions to 15 ft-wide lane with curb & gutter section Raised center median in curb & gutter section Project Typical Sections Typical Section – Paved Shoulders

  16. S.R. 119 12 ft-wide lane & 2 ft shoulder transitions to 15 ft-wide lane with curb and gutter section Raised center median in curb & gutter section Project Typical Sections

  17. C.R. 44 Transition from existing lane width to 15 ft-wide lane with curb & gutter section Raised center median in curb & gutter section Roundabout Typical Section Project Typical Sections

  18. Phase 1 S.R. 19 will remain open during construction S.R. 119 & C.R. 44 East closed to traffic at S.R. 19 C.R. 44 West will remain open during Phase 1 Roundabout S.R. 119, C.R. 44 East constructed during Phase 1 Maintenance of Traffic (MOT)

  21. Conflict Diagram Roundabout Safety

  22. All vehicles slow to enter roundabout Reduced speed differential with Amish horse & buggy Reduced Conflict Points Reduced number of injury and property damage crashes Roundabout Safety

  23. Slowing vehicles at the roundabout Provide deflection on the approach roadway Install curb & gutter for visual narrowing of roadway Successively smaller radius curves to roundabout entry Reduce excessive sight distance Provide signage in advance of roundabout Roundabout Safety

  24. Roundabout Safety Begin Curb & Gutter Section Entry Radius Approach Curve Reduced Radius Approach Curve

  25. Roundabout Basics Slow down on approach to the roundabout Look left Yield to traffic within the roundabout Merge in to the traffic flow Roundabout Safety

  26. Crash analysis shows reduction in crashes at rural high speed roundabouts 62-68% reduced total crashes 85-88% reduced injury crashes Factors include, reduced speeds on all approaches, reduced conflict points, and change in the type of crashes High Speed Rural Roundabouts

  27. Locations of Roundabouts: Bittersweet & Cleveland, St. Joseph County, IN S.R. 25 & Old S.R. 25 in Lafayette, IN Maryland – 9 high speed rural roundabouts* Washington – 2 high speed rural roundabouts* Kansas – 3 high speed rural roundabouts* Oregon – 2 high speed rural roundabouts* Minnesota – 1 high speed rural roundabout* Wisconsin – 2 high speed rural roundabouts* Ontario, Canada – 1 high speed rural roundabout* *Source: Isebrands, H., Quantifying safety and speed data for rural roundabouts with high-speed approaches (2011) High Speed Rural Roundabouts
