AMASE 08 Personal Gear (I) • Daily weather conditions are expected to be around -5 to10 ºC and windy with little or no precipitation. • On a normal day plan to wear: • Long underwear • Long-sleeved (wool) shirt • Wool socks • Loose fit khaki pants • Fleece jacket or wool sweater • Windproof jacket/anorak • Mountain boots (e.g. La Sportiva “Lhotse GTX”) • Gaiters (to keep rubble out of your boots) • Working gloves • Wool hat • Everbody should carry a backpack containing: • Down jacket • Thermos • Lunch pack • Water bottle • Sun glasses • At the Palander Icecap the backpack should also contain: • Windproof cover pants • Wool mittens w/windproof cover • Scarf • Spare wool hat and gloves • Having a warm down jacket available is essential for long periods of work at the same field site or just hanging out • on deck on R/V Lance. Make sure to bring a proper backpack! We recommend that you purchase your own gear • prior to travel or in Longyearbyen.
AMASE 08 Personal Gear (II) Following established procedure when hunting for extraterrestrial life - all AMASE crew members are required to bring proper "Men in Black" attire as part of the field equipment. This means a black suite, black shoes and dark sunglasses combined with a white shirt and black tie (or simply a black dress for the ladies). MiB photo sessions in extreme environments is a longstanding AMASE tradition. NOTE: Sneakers, mountain boots (including covered in foil), ties made of black tape or with colors/patterns and other unsuitable items do not pass! Contact your local tailor for advice
