Due process • The 5th amendment says that no person should “be deprived of life ,liberty, or property, without due process of law” due process of the law means that the government must follow actions made by law and guaranteed by the Constitution, treat all people according to these laws.
Equal protection • All Americans have the rights to be treated under the same law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires every state to grant its citizens “equal protection of the laws.”
Basic Freedoms • “Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Normal freedoms include freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and the right to petition. The basic power belongs to the people so they must exchange ideas freely.
Limits on rights • The rights of the people are not unlimited our government can make laws or rules. These laws or rules protect heath, safety, security, and moral standers.
Duties of citizens • Some of the obligations of all American citizens is to obey the law, to pay taxes, and to defend the nation. All Americans have the right for trial by jury and after the age of eighteen you have to attend jury duty if asked.
Responsibilities • Responsibilities aren’t as strict as the duties because you must willingly take up your responsibilities. You are not punished or arrested for not completing them. Some responsibilities are voting, which helps you take part in self-government.
