Goals: • Develop & implement energy guidelines as per strategic plan • Lower the district’s energy usage • Lower the district’s energy costs • Increase value of monies spent • Provide a baseline for future energy projects and usage • Identify areas for additional engineering • Establish a “best practices” policy • Increase comfort
Strategic Plan: Efficient use of energy: • Energy conservation efforts • Regulate temperatures via Building Automation Control System • Evaluate energy purchase price • Recommend areas of conservation • Communication and feedback of progress
Lower district’s energy usage Identify areas of energy waste • What can be turned off • What can be rescheduled • What can be automated Identify items that could be better utilized • Are we using the correct device or area for the job
Increase value of monies spent • Take advantage of off peak-power when possible • Install power factor correction capacitors • Avoid demand charges from the utilities • More available power at the same cost
What areas should we explore? • HVAC start and stop times • Resetting of domestic hot water temps • Resetting of heating and cooling loop temps • Reduce after hours heating and cooling for occasional staff use
What areas should we explore? (Continued) • Limit non-billable/non-school activities • Turn off computers and monitors • Adding CO2 controls to reduce fresh air intake • Vending machine controls • Light Occupancy Sensors • Restriction/removal of personal appliances from rooms • Lessen heating & cooling in hallways
Lighting Occupancy Sensors • Save 25% on daytime use • Total hours saved per school year 1,780 hours per classroom • Cost to install $200.00 per room • Savings of $36.26 per classroom annually
Vending Machines • 54% saving • Five year return on investment =205% • Cost per unit $82.21
HVAC • Set temp. in classroom • 68 heat • 72 Air • Savings of $17,000 to $18,000 per year
In Closing • All staff and students need to be involved • Energy savings need to be a team effort • Monies saved can be better utilized for other needs within the school district • All areas and items need to be considered for possible savings • Energy conservation is a long term commitment by the district
