History • 1981 – 2000 • 10,000 trees removed • $250,000 expended • Team (MoF, CFS, BC Parks) • 1999-2000 epidemic conditions • 2002 Tree Removals at Campgrounds (Hampton, Coldspring and Mule Deer) • 2002-2005 Continued Fuel build-up • Planning begins in 2004
Manning Fuel Reduction Project2004-2008 Objectives • Reduce the risk to human life and property from wildfire by removing dead and dying pine trees near communities, facilities and infrastructure; • Reduce the potential for catastrophic wildfires which impacts ecological values and to facilitate ecosystem restoration (prescribed fire).
Planning • Fire Management Plan 2001; • Developing a Fuel Break Network System 2002 • Tree Removal Policy 2003 • Establish Project Team 2004 • USIB, WLAP, MoF, Gibson Pass Inc, Community of Eastgate, etc. Monthly meetings • Project Charter, Communications Plan, Budget, (Information Sheet for public, Information Note for executive); • Park Use Permits, Contracts (impact assessments, archaeological impact assessments, site plans, hired an environmental monitor); MoF Forest Licence to Cut (x3) • Operations began in December, 2004 and continued through till April, 2005
