6. HISTORY OF CHERRY PICKER Cherry pickers were originally designed for use in orchards where they are still heavily used.
It lets the picker pick fruit high in a tree with relative ease.
7. BUCKET TRUCK OSHA 1926.550(a):
The minimum horizontal clearance between the cherry picker and the electric cable should be 10 feet plus 1 foot for every 30 kV over 50kV.
The minimum vertical clearance between the cherry picker and live electric wire:
4 feet if less than 50 kV
10 feet if between 50 kV and 345 kV
16 feet if between 346 kV and 750 kV

10. FATALITY WITH BUCKET TRUCK An employee was using a bucket truck and had been given the task of painting a metal utility pole with a spray gun. For some reason, he leaned back in the bucket and the back of his neck came in contact with a 7960 volt bare wire. The employee was knocked out of the bucket and into the bed of the personnel hoist truck
11. FATALITY WITH BUCKET TRUCK Two employees fell out of a "cherry picker" when the basket they were in was struck by a passing tractor trailer. Both employees were wearing personal fall arrest equipment but were not tied off to the basket. One employee was fatally injured when he fell 13 feet to the concrete surface.
12. FATALITY WITH BUCKET TRUCK An employee was riding on the left side of a bucket truck and fell off. He was run over by both left wheels and died.
An ironworker struck by overhead beam while booming basket lift backwards resulting in asphyxia and death.
13. SAFE USE OF BUCKET TRUCK 1. Personal Protective Equipment:
Machine operator must wear hardhat, pants, shirt with 3 inch sleeves, gloves, safety harness, and hearing protection
Always keep the fall protection device fastened and comfortably snug

Operator must know what tasks he/she is to perform while using the equipment on the project

Walk around cherry picker and visually inspect tires, boom, and basket for complications.
Survey the area around equipment for uneven ground surface.
Check for oil or hydraulic fluid leaks.
Look for people behind, in front, or under the machine

Make sure area around the equipment is clear.
Lower basket and inspect railings.
Open railing gate and enter the basket.

When operating stay aware of surroundings.
Maintain specified distance from electrical lines and apparatus as per OSHA safety precautions.
Do not operate the aerial device during electrical storms.
Make sure the safety harness is connected.
18. SAFE USE OF BUCKET TRUCK Never operate heavy machinery alone
Never pass platforms between power lines, even with insulated machines.
Before lifting a load, see the manufacturers manual or load chart affixed to the boom for the lifting capacity of the machine with the boom in various position.
Don’t push vehicle beyond its capabilities.

Make sure area below the equipment is clear.
Lower basket and inspect railings.
Open railing gate and exit the basket.
20. SAFE USE OF BUCKET TRUCK 8. Secure Equipment Not In Use:
Lower cherry picker
Park safely in designated area
Imply emergency brakes
Lock machine and remove keys
Attach a “DO NOT OPERATE” tag or similar warning tag to the starter switch or steering controls before performing maintenance on the machine
