  1. D.T. unit 5C: Moving Toys How to make a moving toy.

  2. Materials: • 2 pieces of stiff card, 21cm x 15cm • 6 card discs, 4cm in diameter • A block of balsa wood, preferably 10cm long and 1cm thick • 2 dowling rods, 4mm in diameter Equipment: • Glue stick and hot glue gun • Hacksaw • Craft knife • Hammer, phone-book and nail (for hole-punching) • Ruler, pencil

  3. 15cm 22cm 11.5cm 1. Take one of your pieces of stiff card (22cm x 15cm) and measure halfway along its’ length (11.5cm). Mark it, and repeat on other side. Draw a line across. Lightly score with craft knife. 2. Carefully fold the card into a right-angle.

  4. 7.5cm 4cm 3. Measure halfway along the fold; it should be 7.5cm. Then measure 4cm up from this point, and mark it. 4. Place the card on the phone book. Carefully use the hammer and nail to punch a hole through the card on the spot you marked.

  5. 2cm 2cm 2cm 2cm 2cm 2cm 5. Take the other piece of stiff card, and measure 2cm along the long edge from the end. Mark it. Then measure 2cm from this mark, and mark that too. Repeat on the other side. Join the marks so that you have 2 lines across the card. 6. Use the craft knife to cut off the 2 strips you marked. Then measure 2cm from each end of the strip, draw a line, and lightly score with the craft knife. Fold these ends over, to about 45 degrees.

  6. 7. Use glue stick to glue these strips in place as supports on the right-angled piece of card; put them at either end. 8. Next, take 3 card discs and glue them together with glue stick to make one thick wheel. Make sure the centre holes line up. Repeat with another 3 discs so you have 2 thick wheels.

  7. 9. Take one of your thick wheels and measure from the edge to the centre hole. It should be around 2cm. Mark the halfway point along this line (1cm). 10. Place the marked wheel on the phone book. Use the hammer and nail to punch a hole all the way through, on the point that you marked.

  8. Leave a small amount of dowling poking out. Thread the rod through both wheels Leave a small amount of dowling poking out. 11. Take one of your dowling rods. Push it though the centre of the wheel that only has one hole. Then push it through the hole you made in your cardboard stand. Then push it through the hole you made in your second wheel. Make sure this second wheel can turn freely without hitting the bottom of the stand. Trim the rod with the hacksaw so there is just a small length of rod sticking out either side.

  9. 1cm 10cm 1cm 12. Take your balsa wood block. Measure to make sure it is 10cm long and 1cm thick. Then measure 1cm in from the long edge, and mark it. Do the same at the other end. Join the 2 marks so that you have a line running along the length of the block, 1cm from the edge. 13. CAREFULLY use a craft knife and a ruler to repeatedly score along the line you drew, cutting deeper each time. Balsa is soft, so you can almost cut all the way through it.

  10. 14. Place your block on the edge of the table, with the deep cut you’ve made in line with the edge of the table. Push down hard on either side of the block, and it should snap, leaving you with a piece 10cm x 1cm x1cm. 15. Repeat step 14 so you have 2 long thin blocks. Measure halfway along one of them (should be 5cm) and mark a line across it.

  11. 16. Gently make one cut with your hacksaw along the line you drew. Then make 2 more, either side, as close to it as you can. You should end up with a shallow cut, approx 3mm wide. 17. Repeat the 3 cuts you made, gently making the slot deeper each time. Stop just before you’ve gone halfway through. BE CAREFUL NOT TO MAKE THE SLOT WIDER THAN 3MM.

  12. 18. Measure 10cm along a dowling rod; mark and cut. Repeat so that you have 2 10cm long rods. 19. Use the hot glue gun to glue the 2 dowling rods together. TAKE CARE: GUN AND GLUE GET VERY HOT!

  13. 2cm each 20. Use the glue gun to glue the joined rods into the slot in your 10cm balsa beam. Leave to dry. 21. Take the other 10cm balsa beam and measure 2cm from one end. Cut off this piece with the hacksaw. Repeat, so you have 2 2cm long pieces.

  14. 6cm 6cm Glue pieces here 22. Measure 6cm from the edge of the upright part of your main base and mark it on the rear side. Use the glue gun to stick one of the 2cm long balsa pieces vertically to the card. Repeat from the opposite edge.

  15. 2cm 23. Place the T-bar made by the dowling rods and balsa beam glued together earlier as shown, with the dowling rods between the balsa blocks. 24. Take the last piece of stiff card and measure 2cm from the short edge. Draw a line across and cut off this strip with a craft knife and a ruler.

  16. Glue here 3cm 25. Take this strip and measure 3cm from the end and draw a line across. Cut off this 3cm x 2cm piece with the craft knife. 26. Glue the 3cm x 2cm piece of card across the two balsa blocks using glue stick, keeping the t-bar in place. Make sure the t-bar can move up and down freely.

  17. 27. The mechanism is now complete! When the wheel on the front is turned, the off-centre wheel at the back turns on an axis, moving the t-bar up and down. You can now attach your design to the front of the dowling rod and decorate the rest of the front to produce your moving picture!
