Description of Class • Native Language Background: Multilanguage background • Language Proficiency Level: High-Intermediate • Age: Young Adults • Class Size: About 10 students • Previous Computer Work: Utilizing MS Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and e-mails • Recent Work: Learning about domestic animals • Class Goals: Improving students speaking and listening skills; building up online research ability; and encouraging group learning
Materials • Computers connected to the internet • White board (optional) • Electronic websites
Objectives Language Objectives: • increasing speaking fluency. • Developing the students skills to state their point of view. Computer Literacy Objectives: • Knowing how to find out about animals online. • Knowing how to open links by clicking on icons
Procedure:Pre-computer activities • Start the class by sharing my personal experience in the zoo, and ask students to talk about theirs. • Introduce the lesson objectives and make students prepare a list of the animals they want to see in the online zoo. • Make students form groups of three. (optional)
In the computer lab • Modeling for the students how to use the website Electronic Zoo to search for animals • Students will use the website provided in the class to look for the animals they have in their lists. • The students think about the animal they choose to talk about after the activity in the lab.
Practice activity • After the modeling, students will be asked to practice and surf in the web to gather as much information as possible on the animal the want to present. • Students will learn how to open a link by clicking on the icon in the web.
Application • Students will use the gathered information for their power point presentation. • Students will come up with new online zoos to present in their class report.
Follow up Activities Homework • Students will prepare a report on their experience in the computer lab explaining the different steps they went through to research in the website. Presentation: • The students will deliver an oral presentation in the class about the animal they want to talk about.
Challenging facts • Students may be unfamiliar with the use of the online zoo. • Students may be distracted by the use of other websites. • Students may come up with too many information that they will not need in their presentation.
Evaluation • Students will be evaluated on an on-going basis during the class and the lab activities(25%). • The teacher will keep a rubric with the name of all the students to evaluate their contribution and use of the website(25%). • The teacher will grade the students according to the final presentation and the report (50%)
Extension • This lesson can also be used for advanced students to show them how to use bigger motors of research. • We can use this lesson to teach other subjects such as grammar or listening as long as the teacher provides the students with the websites he wants them to use.
