    1. The Shedding of Innocent Blood Matthew 27:1-26

    3. Judas Feels Remorse Matthew 27:3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

    4. Chief Priests and Elders Did not Feel Remorse Matthew 21:31b, 32 . . . Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you that the tax-gatherers and harlots will get into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax-gatherers and harlots did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even feel remorse afterward so as to believe him.”

    5. Judas Confesses to the Wrong People and Takes the Wrong Action Matthew 27:4, 5 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to that yourself!” And he threw the pieces of silver into the sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.

    6. Judas Betrayed Jesus; Ahithophel Betrayed David 2Samuel 17:23 (NKJV) Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled a donkey, and arose and went home to his house, to his city. Then he put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died; and he was buried in his father's tomb.

    7. They Pay the Price of Blood Now They Find Scruples! Matthew 27:6 And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.”

    8. They Use Unclean Money, to Buy an Unclean Place to Bury Unclean People Matthew 27:7, 8 And they counseled together and with the money bought the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers. For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.

    9. Scripture is Fulfilled Matthew 27:9, 10 Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one whose price had been set by the sons of Israel; and they gave them for the Potter's Field, as the Lord directed me.”

    10. Jesus Before Pilate Matthew 27:11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.”

    11. The Chief Priests and Elders Accuse Jesus Matthew 27:12, 13 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He made no answer. Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?”

    12. Jesus Does Not Defend Himself Matthew 27:14 And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.

    13. Barabbas Matthew 27:15, 16 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the multitude any one prisoner whom they wanted. And they were holding at that time a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.

    14. Pilate Knows They Have Bad Motives Matthew 27:17, 18 When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew that because of envy they had delivered Him up.

    15. Irony in Matthew: Pagans Like the Magi and Pilate’s Wife Know the Truth, the Elders Reject It Matthew 27:19 And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.”

    16. The Chief Priests and Elders Increase Their Guilt Matthew 27:20, 21 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death. But the governor answered and said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas."

    17. The Jewish Leaders Have Incited a Mob Matthew 27:22, 23 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let Him be crucified!” And he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”

    18. Matthew 27:24 And when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves.”

    19. Deuteronomy 21:6, 7 And all the elders of that city which is nearest to the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley; and they shall answer and say, “Our hands have not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it.”

    20. Deuteronomy 21:8 “Forgive Thy people Israel whom Thou hast redeemed, O Lord, and do not place the guilt of innocent blood in the midst of Thy people Israel.” And the bloodguiltiness shall be forgiven them.

    21. Matthew 27:25 And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children!”

    22. Jeremiah 26:14, 15 “But as for me, behold, I am in your hands; do with me as is good and right in your sight. Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on its inhabitants; for truly the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”

    23. Jeremiah 26:16 Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets, “No death sentence for this man! For he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.”

    24. Matthew 27:26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified.

    25. Matthew 23:24 “You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!” Matthew 7:5 “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.”

    26. Romans 11:18 Do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you.

    27. Acts 2:38, 39 And Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself.”
