Awareness programs • Celebrated World Hypertension Days • Wrote articles in national and regional daily newspapers/ magazines • Delivered Talk programs on television channels/ FM Radio stations, public • Organized Press meet at various places • Published calendar, leaflets etc.
World Hypertension Day 2009 • Successfully organized World Hypertension Day with talk programs, interaction programs, awareness programs and other activities in Kathmandu as well as major cities. Eg: Biratnagar in Eastern Nepal, Dhulikhel in Central Nepal and Chitwan. • Free health camp on hypertension at several places in Nepal.
Contd… • Published poster, pamphlet, calendar illustrating the dangers of hypertension.
Awareness about Salt • Educate the public about the danger of salt. • The consumers must action in choosing lower salt foods and asking for much less salt to be added to their meals specially pickles. • Raise awareness that foods in restaurants, takeaways, fast foods, street food, hawker markets, canteen food etc can contain a lot of hidden salt.
Research Last 25 years – • Prevalence of hypertension has increased by 2.5 times in rural Nepal. • Salt consumption has also increased by 2.5 times. • Positive correlation between hypertension and salt intake and obesity. - Nepal Hypertension Society & MSMT
Future Plans • To increase awareness programs in all the 75 districts • To persuade Ministry of Health to give priority to this important rapidly increasing problem. • To develop partnership with other organizations at different levels regarding detection, control and treatment of hypertension.
Partnership program with Heart Net Nepal • 18 member organizations like Nepal Heart Foundation, Cardiac Society of Nepal, Diabetic Association of Nepal etc. • Celebrated World Hypertension Day • Celebrated World Heart Day • Celebrated World Diabetes Day • Celebrated World Salt Awareness Week
Asia Pacific Society of Cardiology (APSC) – Council Meeting • Preventive cardiology council meeting held on May 2009 at Kyoto, Japan. • APSC should make a statement and recommend to World Heart Federation about reducing salt intake. • Step should be taken to reduce salt intake. • Consumption of salt in the whole Asia Pacific region. • Special session on salt and hypertension in next APSC meeting to be held in Malaysia.
