Agenda • Provide overview / background on HACU Alumni Association (HAA) • Introduce NCHEPM partnership opportunities
HAA Overview • Founded in 1986, HACU, a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization with national headquarters in San Antonio, TX • HACU has provided scholarships and has placed over 7,000 college students in internships with various government agencies and corporations. • In 1997, a group of young professionals associated with HACU's educational programs came together to form the HACU Alumni Association (HAA). • HAA has served as a professional network for alumni and interns and promotes leadership and service for the greater Hispanic community. • HAA boasts a membership of more than 700 individuals and was incorporated as an official HACU entity in 2005. The HAA Chair now sits on the HACU Governing Board as a voting member.
HAA Mission • To unite alumni of HACU student programs in order to: • Serve as a professional and global network for alumni and interns; • Provide leadership and service to current HACU participants; • Advance the mission and goals of HACU in the area of Collegiate Programs.

HNIP 15 year Survey • To measure the impact of past program participants, HACU completed a survey in 2007. • This independent analysis of past program participants proved that the program • Increases professional career opportunities for program participants • Participants now want to work in the federal government • Program is truly “best practice” in the recruitment of Hispanics into the federal government • Survey Highlights include: • As a result of their internship experience, over 90 percent of the participants considered a career with the federal government, a 44-percentage-point increase compared to their intentions prior to completing their internship assignment. • Nearly 38 percent of survey respondents now work in the federal government • 80 percent of students that graduated with their degree were offered permanent positions or internships with the federal government • 60 percent of the participants reported that their HNIP assisted them in finding their current jobs
NCHEPM Partnership • HAA believes there is an opportunity to collaborate with HEPM, potentially for several initiatives: • Institute a mentoring program to pair NCHEPM members with mid-career HAA members • Schedule developmental/leadership workshops • Resume exchanges for recruitment. • Partnership between NCHPEM and HAA would be mutually beneficial, as for HEPMs it would support one of the key pillars of its mission and strategic direction, in terms of fostering development/growth for young Latino professionals, and enriching the pool of those striving to grow into the Government's executive and management ranks. • From the perspective of HAA members, we feel that linking young professionals with HEPMs would be very valuable, in that it would allow HAA members to receive mentoring from HEPMs, with the ultimate goal of providing HAA members with the network and tools necessary to continue to grow within the Government.
Next Steps • Review partnership agreement • Discuss opportunities to engage NCHEPM at upcoming HAA events Questions?
