  4. Stoic Theory of Natural Law • According to Stoicism, the whole cosmos is rationally ordered by an active principle variously named God, mind, Providence, or fate. • cosmos.

  5. Stoic Theory of Natural Law • The Stoic view of Natural Law [universal ethical code]: based on both reason and intuition [direct and immediate apprehension of truth]. • Ancient Greek philosophers were the first to elaborate a natural law doctrine.

  6. Stoic Theory of Virtue • To live virtuously means to live in accord with one's nature, to live according to right reason. • This doctrine was popularized among the Romans . • Founders’ Virtues: frugality, simplicity, temperance, fortitude, love of liberty, honor, etc.

  7. Film: “Gladiator” • The stoic character of the Roman soldier and the emperor Marcus Aurelius was shown in the film “Gladiator.”

  8. Tolstoy: War and Peace • Prince Andrei Bolkonsky • This character in War and Peace was a detached Stoic who took a dispassionate, philosophic attitude toward the tragedies of war and life.

Popular Culture • Spock's stoic temperament, his refusal to say anything or do anything not based solely on logic, is also a reflection of his Vulcan heritage. • Complete adherence to logic is the primary motivating factor in Vulcan metal process. • Of necessity, complete suppression of emotions is required, lest logic be influenced in any way.
