Train the Trainer Tips Why Are We Doing This? • You observe a gap in “SKA” in your staff. • SKA: Skills, Knowledge, and Attitude • Need to determine what they know minus what they need to know. • Through formal and informal assessment you find a knowledge deficiency in your staff. • Negative client feedback or poor customer service.

Train the Trainer Tips • Let’s Face It, Sue and I are not getting any younger • Neither are our peers • Each year we see the number of “old timers” retiring or heading south. • People who were the fore-fathers / mothers of financial aid. • Their experience and knowledge is going with them. • We are entering the 3rd generation of financial aid administrators • Need to pass on what we have learned over the years on to “younger, less seasoned professionals” Why Are We Doing This?
Train the Trainer Tips Who Can Do This? • Subject Matter Expert or Teacher? • At Purdue all administrators are expected to be able to teach at least a cursory level about their area of specialty. • Personal qualities to look for in prospective trainers • Self confident. • Desire to learn and to teach others. • Awareness of environment. • Organizational skills. • Ability to build bridges; relate old to new • Patience
Train the Trainer Tips Develop Your Training Program • Analysis • Formal and informal needs assessment • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your staff / organization • Design • Determine the content and delivery methods • Development • Create the materials (with new trainer input) • Implement the Program • Evaluate the Program • Revise the Program as necessary
Train the Trainer Tips Evaluation • Allow a realistic timeframe before assessing results. • Evaluate based on your objectives • Are the staff learning what you planned? • Did they implement what they learned? • Has training improved their job performance or service to the public?
