Metaphorical epithets • A metaphorical epithet would be using an epithet as a metaphor, to almost personify the noun • “Lazy road” • “Smirking billboards"
Transferred Epithet • A transferred Epithet is an adjective modifying a noun which it does not normally modify, but which makes figurative sense. • Example: “Restless night." The night was not restless, but the person who was awake through it was
Uses • Epithets are often used in poetry • Also, occasionally in music • If used in writing, epithets will most likely be found in conclusions, to wrap up the idea of a noun being discussed • If used correctly, epithets can really stimulate the reader’s senses
