5 Poor Listening Styles • Spacing out, pretend listening, selective listening and word listening are all minor, can be fixed easily – pay attention! • Self-Centered learning takes some practice to break • When we do this, we are doing 3 things • Judging • Sarcasm, eye rolling, “suuurreeeee” • Advising • Student “I am failing math”, Teacher “You need to try harder” • Probing • Killed by a million questions!
Please Listen When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice, you have not done what I asked. When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn’t feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings. When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, you have failed me, Strange as that may seem. Listen! All I ask is that you listen. Don’t talk or do – just hear me.

Genuine Listening • Stand in their shoes “Green, are you crazy, the water is red,” I say. “Hello! Are you colorblind? That’s as green as green gets.” “It’s Red you idiot!” “Green!” “Red!” Conversations are not competitions, they are collaborations and understanding!
Genuine Listening • Practice Mirroring • Repeating back in your own words what the person has said to you. Personalize it, use the word I! • Be careful not to mimic!
