  1. 2 Corinthians Class Schedule

  2. Outline of 2 Cor. 11:16 – 32* Explanation of Paul’s boasting v:16 – v:21 Items of Paul’s boasting v:22 – v:29 External items v:22 - v:27 Internal items v:28 - v:29 Uniqueness of Paul’s boasting v:30 – v:32 * McCalley

  3. 22  Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. 23  Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane— I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. 24  Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes.25  Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren; 27 I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.

  4. 21bBut in whatever respect anyone else is bold—I speak in foolishness—I am just as bold myself. 22  Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. But in whatever any person is bold and dares [to boast] —mind you, I am speaking in this foolish (witless) way —I also am bold and dare [to boast]. Amp After repeated warnings that he was going to boast Paul now finally began. (Constable) Prov. 26:4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Or you will also be like him. 5 Answer a fool as his folly deserves, That he not be wise in his own eyes. Paul seems to have chosen the approach in verse 5 now!

  5. 21b But in whatever respect anyone else is bold—I speak in foolishness—I am just as bold myself. 22  Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. note: “Are they” and “So am I” pattern (equality!) Both Paul and his critic are Hebrews, Israelites and descendants of Abraham Hebrews - was a pureblooded Jew and or one who could read the Old Testament in the original languages and speak it - Acts 6:1 Israelites - Paul was a member of God's chosen people – Rom 9:4, Phil 3:5 descendants (seed) of Abraham - Paul traced his descent all the way back to Abraham. – Rom 11:1

  6. 23a Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane— 23b I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. Are they servants (lit: ministers) of Christ? they = false apostles (from the context) now the last part of the verse makes sense! I speak as if insane (lit: as being out of my mind) insane – from the word for madness (only in this verse)

  7. 23bI more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. I more so (lit:[but] I am more) Paul will now glory in his weakness! However instead of citing successes that he had experienced in his ministry, the awards that he had received from others, he listed his apparent defeats (weaknesses!). Constable now some general statement about his trials in ministry using the phrase “far more” (than the false apostle) in far more (more abundant) labors - to point of exhaustion see 1 Cor 15:10 in far more (more abundant) imprisonments - see 2 Cor 6:5 from Acts we see that Paul was imprisoned in Philippi, Jerusalem, Caesarea, and Rome

  8. 23b I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. beaten times without number, see Acts 16:23, often in danger of death. see Rom 8:36 Paul is not in fact magnifying self in the passage which is now beginning— …there is complete disparity between himself and his adversaries—but he is magnifying, … , the amazing grace of God which in the midst of afflictions and sufferings is sufficient for his every need. Hughes

  9. 24  Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. 25  Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes see Deut. 25:3 – this was the official Synagogue rule Acts says nothing about any of these ! Three times I was beaten with rods, Acts 16:22-23 – typical Gentile punishment – 2 Tim 3:11 once I was stoned – see Acts 14:19 three times I was shipwrecked, - 9 voyages in Acts Acts 9:30, Acts11:25-26, Acts 13:4, Acts 13:13, --- a night and a day I have spent in the deep not sure which voyage

  10. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren I have been on frequent (often in) journeys Paul lists the many dangers while journeying in his ministry! in dangers from rivers, “in dangers” – peril – see Rom 8:35 (in) dangers from robbers, (in) dangers from my countrymen, Acts 9:23&29, Acts 13:50, Acts 14:5&19, 1 Thess 2:15

  11. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren more dangers while journeying in his ministry (in) dangers from the Gentiles Acts 14:2-5, Acts 16:19-22, Acts 19:23-41 (in) dangers in the city, (in) dangers in the wilderness, (in) dangers on the sea, (in) dangers among false brethren this could have been the Judaizers or false apostle

  12. 27 I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. Paul now list the privations in his ministry! I have been in labor and hardship- 1 Thess 2:9, 2 Thess 3:8 through many sleepless nights, - 2 Cor 6:5 in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure 2 Cor 11:27b in hunger and thirst, frequently driven to fasting by want, in cold and exposure and lack of clothing.
