The Dacians • The Dacians were an Indo-European people, very close to or part of the Thracians.The Dacians were the ancient inhabitants of Dacia (located in the area in and around the Carpathian Mountains and East of there to the Black Sea). This area includes the present-day countries of Romania and Moldova, as well as parts of Eastern Ukraine, Eastern Serbia, Northern Bulgaria, Slovakia and Poland. • They spoke the Dacian language, believed to have been closely related to Thracian. • The wolf, a symbol of intelligence, justice and independence, is present in Dacian life. They used the heads of wolves and snakes for the flags in battle, the sound made by these being amplified during the rush of the attack. The Dacians believed that they were immortal and that they became wolves themselves during fights. The most important God was Zamolxe. • After the Romans led by Traian conquered Dacia, the ruler of the Dacians, Decebal, committed suicide so that he couldn’t be made a slave by the Romans. Dacia became a province of the Roman Empire. Thus, combining native and Latin elements the Romanian people and the Romanian language were created.
