Just Who Do You Think You Are? Inquiry –Based Learning
objective: • The goal of this assignment is to learn the responsibilities of different professions using real-world experiences and real-time issues incorporating technology. The student will: • Learn 8 step process of inquiry-based learning • Work individually or groups using Internet to research professions, functions thereof, and how this profession can be used to alleviate ills of today’s society • Present work using a Web tool
Classroom & Curriculum: • Subject Area: Language Arts • Grade Level: 7th • Content Standard: Student will use, read, and view media/technology and analyze content and concepts accurately. • State Performance Indicator: 3.3A Evaluate the validity of web pages as sources of information.
Instruction: • Students asked to name chosen future professions (list provided for those with none). Students asked why they chose this profession and relate them to current state of affairs. Students advised task is to use Internet to research profession, relate it to today, and present to class via technology tool (list of possible tools provided such as Zoho Show, Google Docs, etc.). I suggest starting with my resource site for information (www.teachersourcebytalmea.weebly.com).
Additional instruction: • Students advised they may work in groups but must all contribute. • Students provided enough detail of assignment and mini example to meet expectations. • Rubric posted on my site (encouragement for them to view my site for rubric and helpful research material).
Review 8-Step Process for Inquiry-based learning using world wide web • 1. Generate essential question. Ex. What is… • 2. Foundation questions formed. Ex. How can docs do to help alleviate financial burden of health care on many w/o insurance? • 3. Develop search strategy • 4. Students search web for information. • 5. Evaluate data. • 6. Evaluate quality of data. • 7. Develop answer (organize & synthesize). • 8. Students present work.
Presentations via technology: • Students post work on classroom site. • Students present work to class using Web tool options as explained at onset of assignment (greater details of web tools found on teacher resource site with example uses). If group presenting, all members must take part in presentation.
Mini Example of student work: • I would like to be a Customs Agent because they are a part of the Homeland Security division started by President Bush to protect our country from threats of terrorism, drugs, etc. • Customs Agents perform different tasks based on where they are stationed. For example: Customs Border Patrol Agents are stationed at different borders of the country such as Mexico, and one job function is to ensure no one and nothing crosses into the USA illegally.
Mini Example of student work cont’d • Other Customs Agents can be found at airports called upon to inspect persons of interest, luggage, and other items such as monies, etc. • Some Customs Agents are found in FedEx hub facilities and actually open many packages imported to the USA from other countries at random, due to suspicious descriptions of goods, or because drug sniffing dogs detect different odors.
Mini example of student work cont’d • Here is one example of how Customs Agents help protect the USA… Customs Border Patrol spotted this speeding boat containing 750 pounds of cocaine in blue containers speeding through the Caribbean waters
Mini example of student work cont’d • When I become a Customs Agent, I hope to assist in preventing threats to our country such as diverting drug and money trafficking, smuggling of illegal aliens, illegal animals, etc. • Note: Teacher would ask questions about today’s events such as recent murders in Mexico between drug lords and what are ways they can be prevented from spilling into USA?
