TOPIC SENTENCE • ALL body paragraphs MUST have a topic sentence. • The topic sentence should introduce the topic of the paragraph • This is where you will set up either a comparison or the contrast between the two characters • Name the character, the title of the story or movie, and the author • Quotations around short story; underline movie title
Example Topic Sentence: Heroes come in all shapes in sizes, and Doodle from the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst and Simon Birch from the movie Simon Birch show many similarities in their acts of heroism.

Examples • The “E” stands for Example… • This means that in all of your paragraphs you support your topic sentence with an example sentence. • An example sentence is typically a quote or an excerpt from the text • The “E” is important because… • It shows your audience that your ideas are supported in the text itself • It validates your argument or thought Here’s how your Example will look: “QUOTE” (Hurst 5).
Examining Examples: Here are a few rules to follow with the “E”: 1. Always pick an example that BEST supports your claim and is easy to analyze 2. NEVER just drop a random example in your paper! 3. Lead into your example with statements that reinforce your topic AND introduce your selected excerpt: • i.e. Oprah Winfrey’s work with children can be seen in an article which reads, “Oprah Winfrey is a hero because she inspires creativity in children” (Jones 21). OR • Oprah Winfrey’s heroic deed is seen in Sam Jones’ article, which states “….” 4. CITE YOUR SOURCE! • (Author’s Last Name Page Number). NO COMMAS in between! • For this paragraph, you will use the author’s last name & the page number in which you found the quote • The Author’s last name is HURST and we will number the pages in the short story handout
Analyzing the Analysis • The “A” stands for Analysis… • This means that in your paragraph you prove your topic sentence and supporting example with an analysis sentence. • An analysis sentence should never solely say “This proves my argument because...” You need to analyze why or how it proves you argument! • The “A” is important because… • It proves to your audience that your point or overall arguments are valid and substantial
Sample TEATE A T To begin, Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama are similar heroes because they both have worked very hard to help better the lives of special needs children. In creating the Need to Feed Foundation , Michelle Obama truly shows her commitment to children in need. Furthermore, Oprah Winfrey’s work with children can be seen in Sam Jones’s article, which reads, “Oprah Winfrey is a hero because she inspires creativity within all of us” (21). This quote highlight’s Oprah’s heroic status because it shows that she takes time out of her busy schedule to work with children in need. Although many celebrities would be too busy to help others, Oprah makes it a priority and is therefore a hero.
