STARTER (3 MINS) Song in the Sounds of Music movie? “My Favourite Things”? Lets see some of the exciting nouns that were used. Off course, there’s a little tweak to this, as the song is being changed to “My Favourite Nouns” (apologies to Oscar Hammerstein II, lyricist of “My Favourite Things”.) Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with strings. These are a few of my favouritenouns. LEARNING OBJECTIVES • To recap on knowledge the students already know about nouns. • To build on the knowledge the students already know about nouns. • To know how to identify nouns in our everyday engagements i.e The song as an example. • To tighten up loose ends concerning the knowledge of nouns. • To be able to apply the understanding of nouns in any given piece of writing.
MAIN LESSON NOUN A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea. Whatever exists, we assume, can be named, and that name is a noun. As we already have learnt in previous Noun lessons, nouns come in different categories, explaining the idea the noun in question portrays. We have categories such as; • Proper Noun: This is the name of a specific person, place or sector. for example, Person – John, Tunde, Chidi, Hassan; Place – Jerusalem, Lagos, Africa; Concept – Christianity, Islam, Catholism, Presbyterianism. Proper nouns usually start with a capital letter, like in the examples above. • CommonNoun: This names everything else, things that are usually not capitalized. For example, dog, river, house, school, church, love, death, e.t.c • AbstractNoun: This refers to the kind of noun that is not tangible; that cannot be felt physically, but emotionally. For example: warmth, justice, grief, peace. • ConcreteNoun: This is the opposite of AbstractNoun. It refers to things that are tangible, that can be felt physically. For example: lips, table, metal, computer, boards. • CollectiveNoun: These are nouns that can take a singular form but are composed of more than one individual or items. For example, Jury, team, class, committee, herd. • CountNoun: These nouns name anything that can be counted. For example: four books, seven continents, a dozen buildings. • Non-CountNoun: These are the opposite of count nouns. They name anything that cannot be counted as the examples above. Examples of non-count nouns are; water, air, energy, blood • CompoundNoun: This are those noun words that are basically the combination of more than one word. For example; headmaster, daughter-in-law, half-moon , sick-in-the-mind. • GerundNoun: This is a verb acting as a noun in a sentence. For example; Eat- Eating is good, Swim- Swimming is good exercise.
WORK Remember the song we started the lesson with? There are couple of highlighted nouns. With your current knowledge of the types of nouns, categorize each noun in the song. Note that sentences must start with a capital letter, so don’t confuse some words to be Proper nouns. Also, a word may fall into more than one category, draw a table and slot in the categorie(s) for each word. GOOD LUCK! PLENARY (5 MINS) Identify by cross-matching, and give two examples that haven’t been used in this lesson. Concrete Noun Represent names of animals or things Collective Noun Nouns that consist of more than one word Count Noun Things that can be verified through the senses Non-Count Noun Nouns for things that can be counted Compound Noun Names of places, buildings, and people Gerund Nouns for things that cannot be counted.
N.B You might want to consider memorizing the song in this lesson. It should be useful for bonding times at the time of resumption.
