  1. Rites of Passage A rite of passage is a ceremony, ritual, or event that marks a change in life or status.

  2. Examples • Common rites of passage are birth, marriage, and death.

  3. Purpose • Rites of passage exist to help individuals move from one stage of life to another, reduce stress, create emotional bonds, and strengthen the fabric of society.

  4. Three stage process • Segregation - the individual is separated from the rest of society and from his/her original status. • Transition (liminal stage) – This stage can last for a few hours, days months or years. During this stage the individual is becoming him or her new self and learning their new role. Throughout this transition support or guidance is often provided. • Incorporation and reintegration – The individual is reintroduce to regular society and is expected to new roles and tasks. The reintroduction is usually formally recognized by the society in his or her new status.
