יִצְחָק בֶּן אַבְרָהָם וְשָׂרָה Isaac the son of Avraham and Sarah What Is A Jewish Name
Names are very important in the Jewish tradition. Each of us has a name. Often, we have two names: an English name and a Jewish name. Jewish names can be Hebrew or Yiddish (of Ashkenazic descent), or even Ladino (of Spanish-Jewish/Sephardic descent). Some of us have a Jewish name that we use all the time. Many of us are given a Jewish name when we enter into the Jewish community (birth, adoption, conversion), and some of us get one later, from our rabbi or in religious school. In the Jewish tradition, our name reflects where we come from as well as who we are. Jewish names always include ben (son of) or bat (daughter of) as well as our parents’ names. The formula looks like this: Joseph benChana v Mendel (Joseph, son of Chana and Mendel) What Is a Jewish Name? Visual MN 2.1
