  3. Resiliency Tree

  4. Community Resilience • Common influences on community resilience: • Pre-existing community connectedness and community infrastructure • Community participation in disaster response and recovery • Community engagement in official decision-making, • External support from organisations and authorities outside the community.

  5. Increasing community resilience • Three broad strategies to increase community resilience: • encourage community-led action • understand community complexity and diversity, and • develop and strengthen partnerships between communities and government.

  6. What We Know Works • Encourage leaders in community groups (clubs, churches, schools, etc.) to network with similar community groups in less impacted neighbourhoods for support in achieving recovery and resilience outcomes. • Encourage individuals in most impacted areas to see themselves as leaders in their families, circle of friends and neighbourhoods.

  7. What We Know Works • Promote volunteering – to enhance the well-being of givers as well as receivers • Better understand community needs and wants • Make use of existing groups based around schools, churches, service groups, clubs, business, and other communities of interest.

  8. What We Know Works • Strengthen partnerships between communities and authorities to support resilience-building and engage communities in decision-making • Facilitate the coming together of people to: • organise community events and activities • provide information to assist people in making decisions • Bring neighbourhoods together

  9. What We Know Works • Commemorative events such as: • Memorial services and anniversaries • Opportunities to help people look forward with hope • New Resident welcome groups
