3. Climate of Holland • The Netherlands have a temperate maritime climate influenced by the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, with cool summers and moderate winters. Daytime temperatures varies from 2°C-6°C in the winter and 17°C-20°C in the summer. Since the country is small there is little variation in climate from region to region, although the marine influences are less inland. Rainfall is distributed throughout the year with a dryer periodfrom April to September. • Especially in fall and winter strong atlantic low-pressure systems can bring gales and uncomfortable weather. Sometimes easterly winds can cause a more continental typeof weather, warm and dry in the summer, but cold and clear in the winter with temperatures sometimes far below zero. 6. The food they eat in Holland • Originally the Netherlands is a country where one likes wholesome food like hodgepodge: an oven heated dish of a mix of potatoes, carrots and minced meat. Everyday dinner is most of the time a dish of potatoes, meat and one vegetable. The Dutch like all kinds of bread. Nowadays the Netherlands is a country where lots of different people with lots of different nationalities live. Therefore in the Netherlands you'll find all kinds of different foods and restaurants from all over the world. and they also eat fudge and chocolate things. • Breakfast usually consists of bread, cheese and ham. Cheese would be either young which is fairly mild or old which has been left to mature longer so has a stronger taste. You may also find boiled eggs, bacon and sausage in many hotels to cater for a more varied taste. For the kids there are chocolate sprinkles. These are what you would normally put on top of a cake but in Holland they are sprinkled onto buttered bread and eaten. Lunch may also consist of bread, cheese and ham with sliced tomatoes or other salad items. It is quite common to drink milk with this and for the more adventurous a sour milk drink which is a bit like drinking milk textured yoghurtThere are a variety of popular meal items, chicken or pork on skewers served with a satay sauce and prawn crackers as well as a pickled vegetables. This probably has is roots back to its colonies. Stew is popular cooked and served in a small lidded pot. • Pancakes served with anything. These are large crepes but a little thicker. If in Holland it is always worth visiting one of these restaurants. The pancaked is put on the plate and the rest of the meal placed on top. You may have ham and cheese, apple and syrup, satay chicken. The list is endless. Be warned that these restaurants can close early since they are open from fairly early in the morning. As well as the above dishes there is a host of other food that you would expect to find in a western society. There are the usual American Junk food outlets, but thankfully not too many. One thing you will find in continental Europe is that they do not tolerate bad food so wherever you go you are likely to get a decent feed. And the coffee? The Dutch do coffee very well and why not accompany it with a nice piece of apple cake and whipped cream.

7. Clothes Lightweights with rainwear for summer, waterproof and warmer clothing for winter. An umbrella and a sweater are necessary almost any time of year. Summers are lovely but along with your shorts and beachwear pack a light-weight raincoat - the odd shower cannot be ruled out. Winter winds can be cold and you should certainly wrap up well in January and February. The average temperature in these months hovers just above 35F. One of the nice things about Holland is that the Dutch are relaxed about clothes. You wear what you feel good in - particularly in Amsterdam where an opera audience happily turns up in jeans and t-shirts. Which doesn't mean you cannot dress up. Men should bring a tie and women a skirt or dress if you plan dining up-market. Otherwise feel free. The most famous part of traditional Dutch costume is the Dutch wooden clog or 'Klompen'. Traditional wooden clogs were worn in factories, mines and framsbecause of their resistance to penetration from both punctures and acid.  Clogs are mostly worn in the countryside, as they are warmer and dryer than rubber boots. In the past, the shape and design of a clog could help tell where people came from.
