  3. Born In Transkei, South Africa on July 18,1918. Born into the royal family of the Transkei, his father was the chief of the tribe. After his father’s death, Nelson assumed the role in his tribe which his father would have done. NELSON’S EARLY LIFE

  4. EDUCATION Attended College with ambitions to become a lawyer, but was expelled for participating in a student protest. Attained a law degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and was later articled to a firm of white attorneys.

  5. Nelson Mandela’s Impact on Africa • Held numerous positions in the African National Congress (ANC), including Secretary and President at one time. • Found the ANC Youth League in 1944, whose main purpose was to overthrow the current government and its apartheid ways South Africa’s white minority government policy of racial separation.

  6. Mandela was arrested in 1962 along with several other members of the ANCYL and sentenced to 5 years of hard labor in prison. Convicted of Treason in 1964 and was sentenced to life in prison at Robben Island maximum-security prison. While in prison, Mandela became a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement among South Africa’s black population and among the international community that opposed apartheid

  7. Released from Prison on February 18, 1990 by former South African President F.W. de Klerk FREEDOM

  8. DEMOCRACY • Mandela was inaugurated as the first democratically elected State President of South Africa on 10 May 1994 • Served as President until June of 1999.
