  2. Results of Supporting Manga • Students characterized themselves as avid readers. • They used literary elements to support their positions in a group discussion. • They frequent the library & read constantly. • Are by all measures engaged & avid readers.

  3. Manga Iniatives: GNC • Mandate: • to support and nurture lifelong reading • GNC: Graphic Novel Book Club • Meet every Friday at lunch • 20 – 30 students • Bring their lunch • Activities organized by the students

  5. Manga Initiatives: GNC cont. Fun, interesting, friendship bonding Eliminates grade boundaries Develop leadership skills Great sense of pride and ownership: library is theirs M – F, 8-5pm “The library is our second home.”

  6. Manga Initiatives: Contests Guess How Many Books Read Ballot: next slide Every student who signs out a book on the first day of a new month participates Closest guess wins Totals from Horizon Prizes are geared to the student (e.g. Manga poster, Manga stickers, Yu-Gi-Oh! card, book etc.)

  14. Initiatives: Contests Shonen Jump(1959) Monthly contests: new issue of Shonen Jump a puzzle, word search, etc Photocopies First student to answer it correctly wins the Yu-Gi-Oh! Card and the rights to be the first to read the new issue But… if the puzzle required some writing = less interest

  15. Initiatives:“You want me to write? …No thanks.” Book talks by the students amongst themselves occur daily To discuss a great read To assist a peer in selecting the next read … but how to get them to write down their thoughts…

GNC student initiative was to give Book Talks Students were instructed to select a favourite series, but not a popular one everyone already knew e.g. not Naruto Take turns presenting their book Students were to stand while presenting Why should someone read this book? Why is this a great book?

  19. Initiatives: TDSB Read It! Even though students were shown this site, they were very reluctant to enter a review Also, Shonen Jump stopped including a puzzle: what to do with the “hot” Yu-Gi-Oh! Card? Created a paper version of Read It!

  20. Initiatives: TDSB Read It! cont. Number of reviews submitted increased with the value of the current card available Best review wins the card and first read of Shonen Jump issue Worthy reviews edited/corrected by Dr. Mac entered by another student to the site in exchange for Community Hours
