By 1921… • Bolsheviks establish the Soviet Union • Russia’s economy is devastated from war (WWI + civil war between Bolsheviks and capitalists) • Roads/railroads/telephone lines all down, not functioning.
New Economic Policy (NEP) • Lenin’s plan: • private + public property • free trade (peasants can make profits, but gov’t taxes high %) • meritocracy (best gov’t officials get paid the post) • propaganda campaign (eliminate all opposition to Bolsheviks)
Joseph Stalin • Lenin dies in 1924 and is succeeded by Joseph Stalin. • Stalin implements the first Five Year Plan in 1928: • 250% increase in industrial production within five years • Industrialization huge factories/ manufacturing centers • Collectivization farmers are forced to live/work together
