  1. What is Poetry?

  2. Universal: almost as ancient as language

  3. Says MORE and MORE INTENSELY • Language: • Communicates info • Communicates experience • Persuades

  4. The effectiveness of communicating experience is THE criteria of literature.

  5. Literature • BROADENS • DEEPENS • experience.

  6. The Eagle” by Lord Tennyson • He clasps the crag with crooked hands; • Close to the sun in lonely lands, • Ring'd with the azure world, he stands. • The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; • He watches from his mountain walls, • And like a thunderbolt he falls.

  7. “Winter,” by shakespeare • Why is this poem included? • Shows a series of concrete details to help us experience this winter life ourselves. • What point is raised and shown? • That poetry does not have to be either beautiful or contain any great moral to be poetry.

  8. “Dulce et Decorum Est” • First, simply note down why the poem is included in this chapter, “What is Poetry.” • Again, what is the point? What are the authors using this poem to SHOW us. • Secondly, use this poem as your FIRST of THREE for poems to analyze this chapter.

  9. Poetry is a multidimensional language • Poetry has at least four dimensions: • Intelligence • Senses • Emotions • Imagination • Ultimately, what qualifies as poetry depends on an informed reader. It achieves its extra dimensions by drawing more fully and consistently than ordinary language on a number of language resources (coming up in later chapters).

  10. Assignment: • “The Eagle” this is part of your NOTES for the chapter. • “Dulce et Decorum Est” • * This may count as the FIRST of THREE POEMS you analyze • Select TWO more POEMS on your own. Try to find poems that truly appeal to you, not just the shortest, easiest ones. • Remember: • Write down the title of each of the poems. • Number the questions, and write full answers so I don’t have to refer back to the question to understand your answer.
