  1. Weathering • Weathering - processes at or near Earth’s surface that cause rocks and minerals to break down

  2. Mechanical Weathering • Mechanical Weathering - processes that break a rock or mineral into smaller pieces without altering its composition

  3. Chemical Weathering • Chemical Weathering - processes that change the chemical composition of rocks and minerals

  4. Mechanical Weathering Agents • Plants – plant roots grow breaking through rock, thus breaking rock into smaller pieces. • Animals – digging/burrowing through the ground breaks up rock into smaller pieces. • Water/Ice – flowing/moving water acts as an abrasive against rock thus slowly wearing it down. • Water/Ice – ice wedging – water seeps into crack of rocks and freezes. It then thaws/melts and refreezes over and over. This cycle will cause a rock to eventually crack apart, creating small pieces of rock. • Wind – abrasion by wind blowing slowly wears away rock (being at the beach on a windy day).
