Coastal change and conflicts Typical higher exam question: (6Marks) For a named location, explain the costs and benefits of using hard engineering techniques to protect a coastline from erosion. Have a go! Plan your answer What are the triggers in this question?
A* answer? In Christchurch Bay, groynes have been built and used to trap sediment. Although the groynes are expensive to build it has increased the size of the beach protecting the cliff. It has also encouraged residents/business owners to stay in the area people feel confident that erosion and flooding had been controlled. Groynes can look unattractive and will effect the natural processes. Some environmentalists feel that the groynes effect natural processes too much as well as being an ugly form of sea defence. Or In Blackpool a sea wall has been built. Although the wall was expensive to build it did encourage development of the seafront as businesses felt confident that erosion and flooding had been controlled. Due to the size of the sea wall, access to the beach can be difficult. Some Blackpool residents feel that the sea wall has become an ugly barrier keeping tourists away from one of the resorts main attractions.
