Despite the continued need for SNAP benefits, they will shrink in November. The average cost per person per meal will decrease from $1.06 to $1.35. This analysis is based on USDA data. Nearly half of SNAP beneficiaries in NC are children and almost one-quarter are adults living with children. 81% of households receiving SNAP live in poverty, while 45% live in deep poverty. Households with children receive the highest average monthly SNAP benefit. SNAP reaches populations in need, with 73% of participants in families with kids and 40% in working families. Safety-net programs, including SNAP, helped lift 15.3 million people out of poverty in 2012.
