  2. Background • Know as the “Green River Killer” • Murdered 48 women along the Green River in Washington • Born in Salt Lake City, Utah • February 18, 1949 • He was the middle child of the family • Moved to Washington when he was 11

  3. Childhood • He was never physically or sexually abused • Ridgeway said he wet the bed until he was 13 years old • He was a “slow learner” • Poor reader • He was held back two times in High School • Attended Tyee High School in 1969

  4. Were there precursors? • Very normal childhood • Sexually attracted to his mother • Stabbed a young boy when he was 16 • He walked away laughing • He took part in arson at a young age

  5. What were the Precursors • He suffocated a cat • Killing of animals is a sign of serial killers • Was involved with prostitutes at a young age • Very insecure about himself • Sexually unstable • Demanded to have sex several times a day • Border Line Personality Disorder

  6. Adult life • Has a low IQ and dyslexia • 82 • Which would indicate that he is disorganized • Served in the Navy and in Vietnam • Honorably discharged in • Had three wives and one son • Worked as a truck painter for 30 years • Worked in Kent and Renton

  7. Marriage #1 • First married in 1970 • Claudia Barrows • Married during his employment in the Philippines • Divorced when he returned home

  8. Marriage #2 • Married once again in 1973 • Marcia Winslow • Lived in West Seattle where they had one son • Abused his wife • Divorced in May, 1981

  9. Marriage #3 • Began dating women from Parents without Partners • Met Judith Mawson here in 1985 • Married and lived together throughout his murders

  10. Mental Disorders? • He was pathological liar • Began lying at a young age • He was found to be sane • No mental illness

  11. Nature of crimes • Very organized killer • Hid and disguised evidence from Police • Most victims were prostitutes • Victims were strangled to death • Knife and guns were too messy • Most left nude at the scene • Ages 12 to 31

  12. Behavior when caught • He was caught on November 30, 2001 • He was very upset when he on court • Crying and very remorseful • Helped police find victims and how he murdered

  13. Able to stand trial? • He was able to stand trial • Made a plea bargain in order to avoid death penalty

  14. Sentencing • Sentenced to 48 consecutive life term in prison with no parole • Avoided the death penalty • He did not want to be executed • Tried to persuade the jury by crying in court • Did not work

  15. Life now • Currently an inmate in Walla Walla • Washington's largest maximum security prison • Serving in the Intensive Management Unit (IMU) • In his room for 23 hours a day • Isolated from all inmates • Target of prisoners because of his fame
