  1. History of Europe and NotesLearning Goal: We will learn the causes and effects of change in a place.

    Bellwork for 12/4 What single European historical event has defined Europe?
  2. Ancient Beginnings 1st came the Ancient Greeks They contributed democracy, science, math, philosophy, art, theatre 2nd came Ancient Rome They contributed republics, law systems, Christianity (eventually) When Rome fell, Europe was split into the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire.
  3. The Rough Middle During Middle Ages, Western half became dominate through trade and feudalism. BUT, Western half also forgets things once learned. Eastern half fell to the Ottoman Empire, which originated from Turkey.
  4. The Middle Gets Better The Renaissance (a calling back to the Greek and Roman thought) begins in Italy and spreads. Triggers the Reformation (spilt from the Catholic church) that was started by Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Henry VIII People encouraged to learn and don’t have to be Catholic!
  5. Enlightenment and Revolution! The Reformation triggered the Enlightenment which was time where people valued logic and questioned traditional beliefs. With all these people questioning you get revolutions, the fighting kind and the thinking kind.
  6. World WAR! World War I – the trench war. France, England, Russia, U.S. vs. Germany Fighting mostly done in trenches. World War II – Hitler and the Holocaust England, France, U.S. vs Germany, Italy, Japan Hitler on a one man mission to control world and get rid of Jewish nation.
  7. Russian History NotesLearning Goal: We will learn how human rights are given in different regions of the world.

  8. Russia’s Rough Beginnings Experienced lots of fighting amongst itself and outside Asian forces. Muscovy area grew strong with Prince Ivan III. He built the Kremlin (still stands today) Ivan IV (the Terrible) became first czar. After him, Russia fell into chaos again.
  9. Unity under the Romanovs Finally united under Romanov dynasty Life worsened for regular people and made into serfs-basically slaves. Nobility became more European while the poor clung to their Russian culture. But Romanov czars did good things like modernize Russia, expand Russia, build Trans-Siberian Railroad.
  10. The Rise of Communism 1861, serfs freed and moved to cities with poor living and poor wages. Government passed Russification-forced any non-Russians to speak Russian and follow Eastern Orthodoxy. Problems led to belief for greater economic equality known as communism Russian Revolution in 1917, Romanov family murdered, Communism began.
  11. The Soviet Era Revolution led by the Bolsheviks and Vladimir Lenin to put into place communism. Promised peace, land, and bread for all. After Lenin came Joseph Stalin who took total control and killed any who disagreed.
  12. The Fall of Communism From 1950s to late 1980s Soviet Russia and U.S. in a cold war (economic war). In the 80s, Soviet leaders started allowing economic and political freedom. This allowed satellite soviet countries to overthrow USSR 1991 USSR fell, became a democracy and free market and is today Russia.
