Introduction to mr. Lyon What you can expect from me and what I expect from you.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T • You give it… you get it. • You don’t… you don’t. • I expect your UNDIVIDED attention when I’m talking/I will give you mine when you are. • Respect: • Me • Yourself • Your classmates • The classroom • Do these things and we won’t have any problems.
Accountability • Be responsible for yourself. • Your work • Your behavior • I don’t like excuses… tell me the truth. • The reputation you build today as a person MATTERS!!!!
I don’t put up with putdowns. • Positive environment • No name-calling, teasing, scoffing or mocking… • Safe environment for you to learn and express your beliefs and opinions • It is ok to disagree with someone’s perspective but it is NOT ok to criticize someone based on their opinion.
Cell Phones • Cell phone/Text Messaging use during class periods and in between classes is prohibited. Students will be allowed to use their cell phones before and after school, and during 5th period in the All Purpose Room. Students who violate this policy may have their cell phone confiscated to be returned at the end of the school day. If a student refuses to give their phone to any staff member, they will receive 1 day of in-school suspension and have their phone confiscated for a day. If there is a second offense, the parents will be notified and the student will have their phone confiscated for 3 days…
Cell Phones continued… • A third violation and the administration will notify the parents and confiscate the phone for an entire week. When the administration confiscates a phone, it will be locked in the safe in the high school principal’s office.
iPod’s etc. • When you’re working on your own… you can use them. • Don’t have them out otherwise, please. • Any other electronic device that is deemed to be distracting is subject to confiscation and the same progression as cell phones.
Progressive Discipline • 1st infraction – Meeting with me after class. • 2nd infraction – Phone call home to parents • 3rd infraction – referral to Mr. Seamer • After that… you’re at his mercy.
Seating Charts • It’s up to you. • If you like where you’re sitting… behave yourself. • I’ll adjust accordingly.

Living above the Line • Focused/Energetic • Good habits and positive outlook • Optimistic/Empowered to control your life • DON’T GIVE YOUR DAY AWAY _________________________________________ • Negative/Depressing view on life • Lack of focus • Pessimistic/Powerless
How to get from below to above! • Rest • Be around positive people • Think about things that make you happy • Put things that are bothering you in the PARKING LOT! • Don’t concern yourself with things that you can’t change while you’re sitting in school. • KEEP YOUR DAY!
You Have a Choice!!!! Below the line Above the line • Wait for outside conditions to improve…then the inside gets better. • Improve the inside first… then the outside condition or the experience of the outside conditions gets better.
THE FRAME SEE FEEL The way we see things… The way we feel… What we do… What we get… The way we see things… GET DO
5 LEVELS OF LISTENING • 1) My Life is on My Mind • Being focused on your own life and what matters to YOU • 2) Judgmental • Agreeing or disagreeing; evaluating self and others • 3) Distracted • Focusing on something in the environment • 4) Processing • Thinking about what is being taught… analyzing • 5) The Zone • Being present in the moment; listening to understand
Getting to the ZONE • BE AWARE!!!Know when you are not in the ZONE. • Say “NOT NOW”to the stuff that’s distracting you. • Use the PARKING LOT: That place that we’re putting stuff that’s distracting us. • Focus on the NOW: Be IN THE MOMENT!
