Line Pictures • 3.4 The student will identify and use positive and negative space. • * • Winifred Grantham
Materials • white paper (12x 18) • black paper strips (1/2” x 9”) • white glue • scissors
REVIEW: • lines can make a shapes • lines can make patterns • lines show direction
Teaching the Lesson • I begin this lesson by showing examples. • I point out how a negative shape (space) can be just as important as a positive shape. Then, I demonstrate how one cannot make a flat circle unless the strip is cut. I cut the strip. It becomes a broken line. The broken line is arranged in a circle. I point out the “space”, the negative shape inside the broken line. • I demonstrate how one can arrange these strips to make patterns.
Easy Lesson • Third grade does not usually have any trouble gluing the 1/2” strips. • I suggest that they cut and arrange the strips before gluing. Most students like to glue as they arrange the strips on the white background. • Some students even cut some of the strips thinner (lengthwise).
Thank you • Janet Driver, my Montrose librarian • Maria Munos, dear 4th grade teacher • Kori Mosley, patient art coordinator • and of course, my students, Gabriel, Corey, Angel, David, Ashante and Ethan who let me use their art work.
