The Romanian government and the local authorities have taken within the last year active, concrete steps in promoting high speed road projects in the northwestern part of Romania • Feasibility study for the Petea – Baia Mare 2x2 Expresswayis finalized and construction is planned to start in spring 2008 (financing from the Investment Development Fund) • Feasibility study for the Baia Mare – Zalău 2x1 Expresswayis ongoing, and construction will start in spring 2008 (financing from the European Regional Development Fund) • Construction is ongoing at the “Transylvania”Borş – Cluj – Braşov – Bucharest 2x2 Motorway.
1. The Petea – Baia Mare expressway • Project idea for Vaja (Nyiregyhaza) expressway appeared in 2002 • Feasibility study was ellaborated for Satu Mare / Maramureş County Councils in 2005 – 2006 • Project was declared of national interest and taken over by the National Company for Motorways and National Roads • In 2007, the Feasibility Study will be revised to national standards, and technical project and expropriations will be started • Construction period April 2008 – October 2010
1. The Petea – Baia Mare expressway: Technical description • 75 km long • Estimated construction cost: 526 million euro • 2x2 expressway with motorway characteristics: • Full control of access • The alignment is completely new • Design speed 120 - 140 km/h • Cross Platform of 20,50 m (1.5 m median area, 2 x 2 x 3.5 m traffic lanes, 2 x 2.5 non-paved emergency lane) • Will be built so that it can be upgraded into a motorway (3 m median area, 3.75 m traffic lanes, paved emergency lanes) when traffic requires
2. Baia Mare – Zalău 2x1 expressway • Project idea for the connection between the Vaja – Baia Mare expressway and the Transylvania motorway exists since 2004 • Feasibility study was ellaborated for the rehabilitation of the existing road in 2005 • Feasibility study is currently being modified for the reconstruction of the road as an expressay • The project will be financed through the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Regional Operational Plan 2007 – 2013 • Construction period March 2008 – March 2010
2. Baia Mare – Zalău 2x1 expressway : Technical description • 51 km long • Estimated construction cost 53 million euro • 2x1 expressway: • Partly uses the existing road • Bypasses all settlements • Partial access control • Design speed 100 km/h • Cross Platform of 11 m (2 x 3.5 m traffic lanes, 2 x 2 m shoulders, of which 2 x 1.5 m paved) • Will be built so that it can be upgraded into an 2 x 2 expressway with median and full access control
3. Transylvania 2x2 Motorway • Construction started in 2004 at the Borş – Zalău – Cluj – Braşov Motorway (416 km), first segments will be finalized in late 2008 or early 2009
