Arrival of Islam in India was violent • Muslim invaders extended their rule over Hindu princes in North India • Sultan Iltutmish (r. 1211-1236) • Made his empire the largest state in India • Raziya, his daughter and heir, could never overcome gender prejudice • Muslim invaders transformed by providing protection to those conquered • Hindu never forgot the intolerance and destruction of their first contacts • Overtime, sultans incorporated Hindu into their administrations • Sultanate seized the trading state, Gujarat in 1298 • The Delhi Sultanate was important in the development of centralized political authority in India • Established a bureaucracy headed by sultan and aided by prime ministers The Delhi sultanate in India
