“Singing in the Rain…” How is their geography, climate, and natural resources connected to their daily life? • The United Kingdom (U.K.) is the size of Oregon at 94,247 square miles. For such a populated county of 60.8 million there is a space limit. • Due to Gulf Stream currents the climate is very wet. This keeps citizens on their toes ready with umbrellas. • The U.K. has mostly minerals for natural resources. Some of those minerals are coal, petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, and lead.
The physical features of the United Kingdom varies. Some places is flat while other places are mountainous. This makes the people of the U.K. adapt to were they are living.
“Let them eat cake.” What does the economic data reveal about their quality of life? • The unemployment rate is only 7.8% of the population , which is good compared to the U.S.’s rate of 9%. This means that a lot of the people who live in the U.K. are employed. • The GDP per capita is $36,700. For such a small country most people are fairly well off. • The U.K. sells a lot of consumer goods and electronics. This helps by opening jobs in factories. • The U.K. is a devolved country due to all the industries and the high GDP.
A Unique Culture What do we need to know about these people to understand what makes their culture unique? • The people in the U.K. are very much like the people in the U.S. • What makes them unique is that they have strict manners. To arrive more then a few minutes late to a meal is considered very rude. • In the U.K. people tend to eat heavier meals then we do. The usual breakfast meal is bacon, eggs, toast, etc. • They enjoy gardening and sports such as football (soccer.)
