Vocabulary • Fruit – part of the plant that holds the seed • Seed – part of the plant that holds the immature plant. Part of reproduction • Adapt – the change of a living creature that helps its survival • Reproduction – the creation of immature life to repopulate the species • Life cycle – the stages a life form goes through from birth to adulthood. • Species – a group of the same living thing • Population – a group of the same living thing inhabiting a specific area • Sprouting – when the immature plant begins to come out of the seed – also known as germination
Vocabulary • Germination – the act of an immature plant leaving the seed • Seedling – a young tree or plant • Leaf – part of the plant that is responsible for energy production in the form of photosynthesis • Growth – a life form’s change from birth to adulthood • Root – part of the plant that absorbs water and nutrients from the soil • Stem – part of the plant that supports the leaves. Also the part that transports water and nutrients from the roots to other parts of the plants • Adult – a fully grown species • Flower – part of the plant responsible for reproduction • Pollination – when a plant is fertalized by the transfer of pollen from one plant to another. Usually by a bee or other small insect or bird. Pollination can also occur by wind and water.
Vocabulary • Pollen – yellow substance that fertilizes flowers • Pistil – female part of the flower • Stamen – male part of the flower • Anther – part of the male flower that holds the pollen • Filament – thin stem on the male flower that holds the anther up • Stigma – the sticky part of the female flower that collects the pollen • Style – wide tube that the pollen flow through • Ovary – where the seeds are kept
