  1. “Baseball is a fun game when you know how to hit!” by Don Gawreluk, Head Baseball Coach at Andover High School, Influenced by a number of great sources

  2. Philosophy • YES, I am PREPARED to swing • YES, I will SWING • YES, I WANT to swing • YES, I have learned to cope with FEAR • The only decision that you need to make is NO, I will not swing the bat. • FINALLY, EVERY HITTER IS DIFFERENT – size, quickness of hands, flexibility, etc. – there are commonalities required, but different ways to get there.

  3. The Great Ones – What do they have in common? DiMaggio

  4. 3 H’s • Head – We will look at the great hitters to see how “quiet” they are • Hips – How do the hips rotate on certain pitches? Inside? Outside? Start with “Pocket to Pocket” to trigger the Load. • Hands – Load and Go

  5. Head – Eyes on ball, little movementHarmon Killebrew

  6. Hips – Pocket to Pocket, lead the hands • Pocket to Pocket means that when the pitcher shows you his pocket, you are beginning your load by showing him yours • Stiff front leg – generate whip effect • Bottom half rotates while top half stays “quiet”

  7. Reggie Jackson

  8. Hands • Knuckles • Launch Angle to arm pit – must happen as we stride • Closer the hands are in to the body, the faster the rotation • MATCH plane of SWING to the PITCH

  9. Watch Launch Angle, Proximity of the hands and matched planesHall of Famer, Dave Winfield

  10. Another Example of Great Hands, Hall of Famer and Gopher, Paul Molitor

  11. Let’s Compare – if we taught these guys with a “cookie cutter approach” would they be Hall of Famers?

  12. Sling Shot Effect • There is a separation of the upper part of the body from the lower part of the body • Lower half opens while the upper half counters that movement • Maintain Balance

  13. Ken Griffey Jr. drives a low pitch back where it came from – directional hitting that can be worked on with the tee. Hit it where it’s pitched . . .

  14. Making AdjustmentsKirby Puckett

  15. Mickey Mantle goes the other way

  16. Ted Williams – watch the back foot – would you correct him? Many of today’s coaches would. Plus, can you catch any other flaws in the “Greatest Hitter who ever Lived?”

  17. 3 H’s and a Definite YES Philosophy!Barry Bonds

  18. 3 Things must happen to Hit the Ball Properly • Hands must stay inside the ball • Hips lead the hands • Match the swing plane to the plane of the pitch – 1/8 of an inch creates the trajectory needed to hit a homerun

  19. George Brett – one of the last guys to flirt with .400

  20. HAVE a PLAN • A study of 11,733 at bats done a couple of years ago showed the following results: • Count of 0-0 - batting average of .332 • Count of 1-0 - batting average of .348 • Count of 2-0 - batting average of .340 • Count of 2-1 - batting average of .347 • Count of 3-1 - batting average of .357 • Count of 3-0 - batting average of .433

  21. The Down Side to Falling Behind • Count of 0-1 Batting Average of .319 • Count of 1-1 Batting Average of .313 • Count of 1-2 Batting Average of .156 • Count of 2-2 Batting Average of .179 • Count of 0-2 Batting Average of .156

  22. Know Your Role • In this study, out of 837 lead off walks or HBP’s, 47% of those scored a run for their teams which most often led to Multiple Run Innings.

  23. Every hitter likes fastballs, just like everybody likes ice cream. But you don't like it when someone's stuffing it into you by the gallon. That's what it feels like when Nolan Ryan's throwing balls by you. ~Reggie Jackson

  24. A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. ~Earl Wilson • "There has always been a saying in baseball that you can't make a hitter, but I think you can improve a hitter. More than you can improve a fielder. More mistakes are made hitting than in any other part of the game.” - Ted Williams

  25. More to Consider • Prepare for your at-bats 5 hitters in advance • Know what the pitcher is getting hitters out with on that given day • Know your strengths • Avoid the first curveball that you see • Stacked position and Palm Up/Palm Down at impact • Recognition of pitches – .17-.21 seconds for an 90 mph fastball and you need .20 to complete the swing.

  26. How do you get there? Swing the bat!
