Status of AATSR Land Surface Temperature Development Hannah Tait AATSR System Analysis Engineer (EOP-PPP) ESA ESTEC Keplerlaan 1, PO Box 299, Noordwijk, NL Hannah.Tait@esa.int
Background • 2000: LST retrieval algorithm proposed by Fred Prata (CSIRO) and discussed by the SAG. • 2001: ESA propose to support the prototyping of the algorithm within the PP (as part of the AATSR ESL contract). • May 2002: PP implementation undergoes Acceptance Tests. • July 2002: Fred Prata visits RAL. • September 2002: LST Validation Team Meeting – Valencia. • October 2002: Start of provision of L1b scenes over validation sites to RAL for processing into prototype product.
Current Status • Products containing the prototype retrieval are now being supplied to the Validation Team by RAL via FTP. • L1b data have been supplied to RAL for: • Thangoo, Amburla, Hay, Dunhuang & Sonora (1 Sept to 23 Nov) • Selected overpasses over Borneo (1 Sept to 23 Nov) • Spain and Kamchatka (Nov) • Sahara and Siberia (1 Sept to 23 Nov) • Data over volunteer sites to be ordered next. • No validation results reported yet.
Future Plans • Continue initial evaluation activities until Feb 03. • In parallel, start implementation of LST in the OP in Jan 03. • Convene a dedicated LST review meeting at the end of Feb 03. • If the results are good: • Offer the new retrieval to users ASAP (March/April 03). • If problems are identified: • For minor problems, open in March/April, but with a health-warning; • Correct the PP and OP in parallel and offer the product ASAP afterwards; • Stop work on the OP until the problems are resolved. • Once the retrieval becomes part of an official ENVISAT product, validation will continue within the framework of routine product quality monitoring.
